Position Summary

The Assistant Engineer takes direction from and works under the leadership of the Chief Engineer and shares responsibility to ensure the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of all systems and the physical plant on the headquarters campus in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.

The Assistant engineer works on all electrical and mechanical systems including plumbing, lighting, heating, air conditioning, elevators, etc. in all campus structures and on the grounds with consistent focus on safety, security, emergency preparedness, sustainability and cost effectiveness.

The Assistant Engineer’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Help to assure that allmechanical systems and the physical buildings, garages and grounds are ingood working order, that issues are catalogued in a centralized system andaddressed in a timely fashion, and that all routine maintenance isperformed on schedule.

  • Maintain a strong knowledgebase in current industry practices andsuggest creative,technically progressive approaches.


  • Use personal protectiveequipment following all OSHA guidelines.

  • Regularly test all fire andlife safety systems.


  • Ensure that generators andother backup equipment are maintained in good working order.

  • Conduct periodic testing ofemergency systems, machinery and procedures.

  • Understand local coderequirements and inform management of any shortcomings.


  • The Gallagher campus isequipped with an extensive complement of “state-of-the-art” equipmentincluding those listed below. As a first priority, the Assistant Engineer must familiarizehimself/herself with this equipmentand attend/watch training on:

  • Vivreau advanced watersystem

  • Food service equipment toinclude everything in the café, kitchen, 2nd and 11th floor catering pantries;all coolers including walk-ins.

  • Fire rated smoke curtains

  • Gunnebo OptiStile turnstiles

  • Skyfold operable partitions

  • Charge point stationslocated in the east/west garagefor electric cars

  • Lutron Lighting Controls

  • Pumping Lift Stations

  • BAS (Building AutomationSystems) buildings and garages

  • LG- VRF units and theirremote controller

  • Boiler, UPS, Fire alarmsystem, generators (both buildings)

  • Lawn irrigation system

  • Keeps preventive maintenanceroutines and systems up-to-date to maintain machines in like-newcondition.

  • Operates systems to optimizeperformance through proper controls and maintain occupant comfort whilecorresponding to system design criteria.

  • Maintains adequate inventoryof parts and supplies.

  • Conducts proper care andmaintenance of outside systems such as storm drains, retention pond, sumppumps, parking lot elevators and lights, etc.


  • Works with the Chief Engineerto understand and train on any new equipment installed during any newconstruction projects.



  • High school diploma and 4 years related experience.

  • Skilled in performing carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, and HVAC maintenance and repair.


  • Post secondary education and/or specialized training highly desirable.

  • Problem solving & Analytical Skills: ability to identify and explain issues, collect and analyze information to understand the problem and resolve or escalate.

  • Computer skills/Technical Aptitude proficiency in computer technology, i.e. e-mail, MS Word, Excel, & other building related systems.

  • Utilizes technology confidently.
